One Cold Photography Project

When my buddy Brandon told me about the opportunity to test and photograph Patagonia wetsuit gear, I couldn't pass it up. We decided to head to Taylor Reservoir, nestled in the picturesque foothills of the Continental Divide at an elevation of 9400ft (2865m).

Late November had already brought a dusting of snow, and the wind was howling, creating a bone-chilling wind chill of around -15 degrees. It was undeniably cold, but with careful planning and precautions, we were determined to make the shoot happen. We took extra measures to ensure Brandon stayed warm while changing on the icy shoreline, as the lake's edges were frozen and treacherous.

Once Brandon hit the water, the magic began. Against the backdrop of the majestic Continental Divide, we captured some truly stunning images of him kitesurfing at the Reservoir. His exceptional athletic skills made navigating the icy lake shore seem effortless, bringing an added sense of excitement and adventure to the shots.

The Patagonia wetsuits passed the test with flying colors. Once Brandon was suited up, he felt warm and cozy, confident he could endure an hour in the frigid water. However, despite the success of the project, the images never made it to Patagonia's website or promotional materials. I never got any feedback on it, but in the end, we were proud of the project we had undertaken, ensuring that no fingers were lost to frostbite along the way.

This kitesurfing adventure at Taylor Reservoir was a testament to the resilience and spirit of exploration, pushing boundaries even in the face of freezing temperatures. And although the images may not have graced Patagonia's platform, they serve as a reminder of the thrill and beauty found in embracing the elements and capturing moments of pure adrenaline and natural wonder.
