Personal Photography Project

Accompanied by Andrea Hoffman and Julie Nania, I embarked on a thrilling climbing adventure to the high desert. With a camera and sunscreen in hand, we ventured to Shelf Road near Cañon City—an iconic destination known for its impressive climbing walls and an abundance of bolted pitches. The allure of this place lies not only in its natural beauty but also in the meticulously marked routes, making it a climber's paradise for planning and exploration. Nestled nearby is a campground that offers convenient car and tent camping, attracting enthusiasts from all corners of the state who seek the adrenaline rush and exhilaration of conquering these vertical challenges.

The backdrop of our adventure gifted us with a mix of cold autumn mornings and sun-drenched days, perfectly suited for our climbing endeavors. Adding to the camaraderie was Poko, Andre's dog. Poko, with his affinity for sticks and basking in the sun, became a great climbing companion, content to chew on his stick while we ascended the walls.

Putting Together The Puzzle

Climbing, I soon discovered, is an art to capture through the lens. The possibilities for framing shots are limited, and my personal creative boundaries were definitely pushed. As a photographer, you realize early on that your frame options are finite, and the challenge becomes as real as the climber's determination on the pitch. To truly capture the essence of climbing, one must not only possess the skills of a photographer but also the prowess of a climber. Ideally, you would be leading the pitch and positioned atop while the other climber ascends. Unfortunately, that's not my expertise. However, with the generosity of the ladies, I was able to navigate the heights by relying on their belay support, granting me access to unique vantage points.

Another hurdle I encountered while photographing climbing is conveying the climber's inner struggle—a battle of determination, fear and joy. Every decision, from hand and foot placement to body positioning, presents a puzzle waiting to be solved. Trial and error become your companions, mirroring the intricacies of the climbing experience itself.

Despite the challenges, capturing the essence of rock climbing through photography is a gratifying pursuit. The combination of physicality, mental fortitude, and the harmonious dance between climber and the natural elements create a tapestry of emotions and stories waiting to be told.

As I go through the images, I am reminded of the unique connections forged amidst the heights. It is within these challenging moments that friendships deepen, bonds strengthen, and a profound appreciation for the resilience of the human spirit takes root.
