Skiing is awesome, but the real magic happens when you join forces with skiers who live for pushing boundaries. When the opportunity arose to collaborate with the bad-ass duo of Tom Runcie and Rob Dickinson on a project for Powder magazine, showcasing the hidden gem that is Monarch Mountain, my excitement was pretty high!
My journey as a photographer took flight amidst the snowy slopes, with my trusty Nikon D80 capturing the raw talent of my friends as they aspired to become elite shredders. Those early days were filled with endless laughter, as we took turns conquering the park features while I honed my skills behind the lens. Composition, body positioning, and capturing the perfect moment of airtime became my artistic mission.

The Hidden Gem

Fast forward to the present, and the exhilaration of exploring Monarch Mountain alongside Tom and Rob took that joy to new heights. With the generous assistance of the ski patrol, who whisked us to the summit of the hike-to-area on their sleds, we were able to maximize our time and cover vast stretches of terrain. The snow gods smiled upon us, gifting us with pristine powder and a plethora of hidden gems tucked away in the hike-to-area. Tom and Rob fearlessly carved their way through pillow lines and mushroom-like features, leaving trails of pure stoke in their wake.
We set out on a brief backcountry trek to the magical "Paradise Trees," which were conveniently situated just over the road from Monarch Mountain, as the sun started to set. Our crew expertly danced through the virgin snow as the limited tree cover made the ideal backdrop for excellent powder skiing. Every turn was a demonstration of the ability and finesse of these exceptional athletes, and while I snapped away with my camera, memories were permanently preserved.
We gathered once more on the bar deck as the day came to an end to watch the fiery sunset over the crest. We lifted beers in celebration of the adventures we had experienced, the friendships we had built, and the unbridled joy that skiing gives to our lives. I will always remember that day as proof of the limitless joys that await individuals who dare to follow their passions.
